Race Notes From Run Bum
Come run the highest and hardest 5K in Georgia. That's right - a 3.1 mile, point to point road race that finishes atop Georgia’s highest mountain, Brasstown Bald. (4,784 ft.)
The highest race of any distance in Georgia and that won't change.
This race has been happening for almost 30 years. Run Bum took over directing the race in 2018. For those of you who do not know Sean Run Bum Blanton he has run 150+ ultra marathons. He started and owns the 2nd largest trail and ultra running race company in North America and trains on this road regularly.
In his words…
"This race is a piece of history. I have run it a bunch of times and broken 30 minutes on it. I have been 2nd and 3rd but never won the dang thing. I have seen the race lose momentum over the last couple of years, so I bought it, to keep it going. I will run it with everyone each year. I have changed the date from December to last weekendin April. I want to make sure we run the actual course each year with no changes."

This is a fun race that's meant to test people. Most people will hike 90% of this race, and that's okay. The hardest mile to me is mile one. It is the steepest. The last mile is the easiest but guess what? Your legs are dead so it makes it harder. This is man vs mountain. I do repeats up and down the road when training for races in the Alps. I know this mountain intimately. I can tell you that if you find 5 ft. of downhill on the course then you went off course. It's a grind, but the feeling and the view you get from the top, is simply unparalleled. I am a trail and mountain runner and I hope this race is an icebreaker for those who are tired of running for time and want to experience something greater. People always ask, “Why would you run up that mountain?” and I always answer the same… “Nothing easy ever earned you anything worth while.”
